I keep posting blog articles to our company website blog, and then I think they are worth sharing with everyone. In an effort not to duplicate content on a second blog post of the same content, I will just post here advising you of the article. If you are one of us in the four state region who are enjoying our first winter bout of wet, snowy, icy weather – not counting the October storm – this may just be of some help. As I left my house this morning I got to thinking about what some of my co-workers would be driving to the office in. This made me think of what the best vehicles may be for winter travel. What’s This SOPA?

I posted a very similar blog to our Agency website this morning, but I wanted to share it with the followers of this blog as well. Yesterday, you probably noticed, if you went onto your favorite websites like Google, YouTube, or Wikipedia you were most likely greeted with a BIG difference. Millions and millions of websites were set up in an effort to protest a couple large proposed Congressional legislation. The largest know is a bill know as bill 3261 or commonly referred to as the “Stop Online Privacy Act,” or SOPA would significantly alter the galore of websites currently on the internet.

Many of the website that are joining in on the resistance believe that SOPA is the US government’s way of censoring the internet. Below is a short video explaining what SOPA is and how people feel about it:

This legal document could have a lasting effect on anyone that uses the internet. With social media and blogging at the forefront of the digital marketing orbit, your company can never be too careful. Invest in the proper commercial insurance policy to protect your company in case something happens.

Gun Safety

You can read more about this topic on our on-site blog, but here are a few gun realted facts, myths, and tips.

According to the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, approximately 200 million guns are owned in America, and this number is growing daily. Every year, nearly 1,500 children die from guns and many many more are seriously injured.

Some facts that you may find interesting (or disturbing):

More Americans have guns than dogs.
1 in 3 families with children have at least one gun in the house. That’s more than 22 million children living with guns.
Less than half of those gun owners with children leave the gun unloaded and locked.
Most victims of unintentional shootings are boys. They are usually shot by a brother.
It is split 50/50, shooting deaths occurring in the home versus in the home of a friend.

Myths about Guns:

Most parents believe their children do not know where they are hidden.
Many parents believe their children are not strong enough to pull the trigger.
Most parents believe their child could tell the difference between a toy gun and the real thing.

Gun Safety Tips:

Keeps guns unloaded and locked down. If you feel the need to keep your firearm loaded, keep it locked in a safe, NEVER tell your children the combination.
Guns should never be left within reach of a child, loaded or unloaded.
Keep ammunition and guns locked in separate locations, never together!
Never leave a child unsupervised with a weapon of ANY type.Although the below image has some humor involved, lets be sure we are being responsible, and safe with any weapon we may have around the house!

2011 Bra’s For A Cause

Fargo Insurance is proud to host it’s Second Annual Bra’s For A Cause. At each of the five (5) Fargo Insurance locations (Martinsburg, Ranson, Hedgesville, Inwood, and Annandale, VA), our staff will be collecting any Bra, in any condition, for the entire month of October. For each Bra we receive, Fargo Insurance will donate $.50 to help fund the fight against Breast Cancer. Furthermore, the Bra’s collected in moderate to good condition will be donated to the local woman’s shelter.

Fargo Insurance would like to invite you to join us for a “Kick-Off” celebration at our Martinsburg Location (500 Williamsport Pike) on October 7^th, from 11am to 3pm.

Young Drivers – To Be or Not to Be?

For anyone that has a young driver you might agree that according to statistics, young drivers under 25, especially males, belong to a high risk group, (i.e. those who tend to make insurance claims more often than any other group of drivers). Young drivers don’t have the experience older driver do and therefore are much more likely to have accidents. Your car insurance West Virginia may suffer from having a young, risky driver on your policy.

Not to get into too many details, (to protect the innocent [or guilty]), I have some close family friends, and they have a 16 year old female driver. I love this girl, but I have said before… she will NEVER drive with my daughter in the vehicle. Regardless of the fact I love her, I understand that young “kids” just don’t know how to drive – and perhaps whats worse is that they think they do! So this friend got her license about 4 months ago. Being the good parents her’s are, they gave her some freedoms and even bought her a car – with the stipulation that there would only be ONE vehicle purchased for her. I’m sure you know where this is going – she wrecked it. Kids will be kids – you love them unconditionally, they learn from their mistakes, and move on. She moved on alright… wrecking the family vehicle a couple months later. Again, we love, we forgive, we move on… but this time… the West Virginia auto insurance doesn’t! Again, I love her, and I am proud of her for many other things, but driving is not something I would call a “skill” of hers. However, she is an excellent motivation for me writing this series of blogs! SO over the course of the next couple posts, we will look into some tips and ticks that can keep your kid safe, on the road, and insured! Please pass this series along to those who need it! Share it on Facebook, and print it off for your friends at the office with young drivers! We want to help you with your WV Car Insurance, and we want you to help your friends.

Besides some obvious recommendations, like keeping one’s vehicle record clean and practicing safe and careful driving, there are other important things that a young driver(and parents) can do in order not to fall under the above mentioned statistics.

Here is my first recommendation to you… have a LOCAL WV insurance agent, like Fargo Insurance!

Have an agent that you can become friends with. An agent that understands the circumstances of your current life. These mega-million, TV, E-Insurance companies have no clue who you are… a local agent will be at local football games with you, will have kids the same age as yours, and will know your community. A LOCAL agent will be able to go to bat for you… and will be an advocate for you in your time of insurance need! To go one step futher have a local agent that has the ability to write through multiple companies. Each company offers it’s own pluses. Having a agent (like Fargo Insurance) gives you the opportunity to look at different companies and choose the coverage that is best for you!

Hurricanes and Homes (and Creeks)

I grew up on a goat farm in Virginia (Luray, Va – Home of the Luray Caverns). We lived about 20 minutes outside of Luray off a dirt road that bordered a “creek” and it was approximately .96 miles to get to our homestead. On more than one occasion, this little dirt road was a real inconvenience. The little things stand out. For instance, not being able to wash your vehicles because by the time you made it to pavement it was dirty again. Shoveling the snow time and time again so that vehicles could make it up and down the road. Never being able to drive with an open container of any liquid for fear the potholes would cause your pants to change color (matching the liquid in your cup, not some other color). One major thing stands out and that is attempting to walk the road the morning following a hurricane, yet there was never a road to be found. My family was smart, we always parked at least one vehicle at the end of our dirt road when it was calling for the next big hurricane. We would walk to .96 miles from our front door to our car because, at times, for months we would not have a road to drive. That little “creek” I mentioned could do some serious damage on a back country road. The creek was harmless, but the storms were not. Another “fond” memory I have following a hurricane is the large walnut tree protruding through our living room window the morning following a hurricane. Since that time, my father has added an addition onto their house, and used wood from that very walnut to make window sills on all 12 windows in the addition.

Although, a fun story to type, I do bring with it a point…
